The Old Girls Association (OGA) arose as a tribute to Headmistress Ms Edith Aitken. In 1907 she called on the first group of Matriculant school-leavers to establish a small committee, which would enable future school-leavers to maintain an enduring relationship with their former school. She explained how “the past, the present and the future of the school could be welded together into a timeless entity.” And so the PHSG Old Girls’ Association - that “timeless entity” - came into being.

Daisy Anthill was the first secretary of this new Association and later in life she recalled how very important the Old Girls were to Edith Aitken. In the OGA notes of 1908, Ms Aitken wrote that “every girl who has been a pupil of the school in any true sense should feel always a link of natural piety with it. I desire very much, for the sake of the school, and of the Old Girls themselves, that they and we shall make the effort necessary for keeping up our connection.”

This dynamic association has survived for over 100 years, but don’t let the phrase ‘Old Girls’ mislead you into thinking that the OGA consists solely of old ladies knitting and playing bridge. Members include the matric ladies of last year right back to those who left the school in the 1930s. OGA functions have included annual reunions, luncheons, teas, branch meetings, social evenings and Annual General Meetings. There are fiercely competitive sports and cultural meets between the Old Girls and the current school teams. The Old Girls’ Stall at Spring Fair provides a valuable opportunity for fundraising for the OGA, and allows Old Girls to reconnect and share memories.

Membership is open to all Old Girls who have attended one or more years at the school, as well as to former members of staff. Honorary membership has been granted to Headmistresses, as well as to several men who have made a valuable contribution to the school or to the OGA.

The OGA’s aim is to strengthen the bond that still unites us and to maintain the ethos of our alma mater in perpetuity. Whenever possible, the OGA supports the school in its many endeavours and functions. Lately, Facebook, email and the Web have enabled Old Girls to extend and strengthen the Old Girls network, and to share life stories at the touch of a button.

In the words of Headmistress Ms Eileen Nelson: “PHSG girls, with their gifts and talents, are part of that golden thread which holds together the fabric of our land.”
