North Lodge
This beautiful hostel houses around 70 girls of all grades who become fiercely loyal to their school, the hostel and their North Lodge “sisters’. While the rules are very strict and girls have to work to earn their “privs”, there is also a great deal of fun to be had. The hostels compete against each other for the Volleyball and Water polo cups and the girls plan movie nights and special dinners – such as for Valentines’ Day and our own brand of Thanksgiving. In the third term, the girls produce a concert to raise funds for Hostel and they (and their parents) man a Boarder stall at the annual Spring Faire.
North Lodge is run by a head girl and a deputy (Lebogang Kgothadi and Nicola Scurr) who are chosen by the girls themselves. They determine the way forward for the year and with their fellow Matrics, they, as the big sisters, help to maintain order and the general smooth running of a place where girls who are far away from parents, feel nurtured and safe.
There are five teachers who do duty at North Lodge and this means that every evening a different teacher arrives at 17:15 to administer plasters, have supper with the girls and see that “lights out” is promptly at 21:10 for the Juniors and 21:30 for Senior girls.
Girls who flourish at hostel, are those who have a wide range of interest and who adapt easily in any situation. They are self disciplined and are excellently skilled in time management and team playing. They are always aware that their being at Hostel is a very rare privilege and they ensure that the proud tradition of the Hostel is carried through the generations.
