ART

Visual Art is 'communication' in the form of visual art products. Art is experienced daily whether you are aware of it or not. It does not matter where you live; once you turn on a television, open a book or magazine, you are surrounded by art in a multitude of different forms.

Art is not just about painting pictures, modelling sculptures or designing buildings. Art is also found in objects we use or see in every day life, e.g. in the design of a car, dinner plate, cup and saucer or the crest of our school badge.

Important aspects of art are design, visual communication and visual literacy. At school level, learners are encouraged to be creative, experiment with various materials, acquire a basic knowledge of art styles and movements (history) and to work in three dimensions. Today there are various new career opportunities in a wide variety of fields and the Art student is well equipped with skills to start her own business.

Visual Art consists of 3 components:

History, Drawing and Practical.

The learners do all of the following practical disciplines in Grade 10 and choose one for Grade 11 & 12:

  • Sculpture
  • Painting
  • Photography
  • Printmaking

Drawing forms an important part of the subject.

History of Sculpture/Painting/Photography or Printmaking is compulsory.

A learner may only take one discipline in Grades 11 & 12.

Design

This consists of 3 components:

History, Drawing and Practical.

In Grade 10 all four disciplines are taken and in Grade 11 learners choose one of the following disciplines:

  • Communication, fashion, jewellery and ceramics.

Drawing forms an integrated part of the subject.

History of Design is compulsory.

It is possible to take both Visual Arts and Design. However, learners intending to do so need to be highly disciplined, motivated and talented. Excellent time management skills are also a pre-requisite.
