ENGLISH SUBJECT INFORMATION

English is the largest subject at the school as it is the language of instruction and involves every learner at Pretoria Girls High School.

Language is an essential expression of the life of the learner and is integral to the formation of values; it is basic to all growth and development as individuals and as members of society, therefore the general aims of the teaching of English are:

1.1.   to strengthen the learners' confidence and to encourage their enthusiasm, vitality, spontaneity and originality through their active participation in meaningful language activities.
1.2.   to enrich the learners' ideas, to stimulate their thoughts and feelings and to develop their understanding of themselves and their own emotional and moral responses to life and the world around them so that they may live more fully, more consciously and responsibly.
1.3.   to develop the learners' ability to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings effectively through language.
1.4.   to help learners develop the language skills which contribute to effective learning, expression and communication so that they reach a level of language competence and performance which will enable them to cope with the situations they will encounter in daily life.
1.5.   to train learners to regard communication as a process involving not only the ability to express but also a willingness to respond: to listen, to speak, to read, to comprehend, to evaluate, to infer, to observe and, above all, to participate.
1.6.   to develop in learners the ability to discuss and give reasoned accounts of their responses to what they read
1.7.   to give learners the opportunity to express themselves and develop their creativity in linguistic form through the writing of poems, plays, stories and compositions; through the telling of tales and stories and through the dramatic exploration of situations and events.
1.8.   to cover, by the above, all the learning Outcomes of Outcomes Based Education for Language, Literacy and communication which are:

LO1 Listening and Speaking: the learner is able to listen and speak for a variety of purposes, audiences and contexts.

LO2 Reading and Viewing: the learner is able to read and view for understanding and to evaluate critically and respond to a wide range of texts

LO3 Writing and Presenting: the learner is able to write and present for a wide range of purposes and audiences using conventions and formats appropriate to diverse contexts

LO4 Language: the learner is able to use language structures and conventions appropriately and effectively
