LIFE ORIENTATION & PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Life Orientation focuses on developing learners who can make informed decisions. To make an informed decision a learner needs to know what her values and aspirations are and we explore these in depth in our classes. Our objective is to assist our learners to develop self-esteem, to become responsible citizens who are proudly South African, to promote physical well-being and a life-long commitment to fitness and physical recreation. In addition, our objective is to enable learners to choose a career pathway which suits their personalities, abilities, interests and values.

Since increasing risks of contracting AIDS or engaging in substance abuse can prevent a learner from reaching her full potential we hold an Aids Awareness Week and a Drug Awareness Week once a year. Learners are encouraged to give generously to Aids victims and to practice the spirit of ubuntu in their relationships with others.

Another component of Life Orientation is Physical Education which plays a vital role in upholding the school charter of the healthy mind, the trained physique and the disciplined character. Physical Education allows the learner to be able to explore and engage responsibly in recreation, physical activities and to promote well-being. The subject is made up of a theoretical and practical component.

Grade 8 and 9 learners have a double lesson every second week. This term we are focusing on skin cancer and the techniques of the different swimming strokes with the grade 8 learners while on the other hand the grade 9 learners are carrying out the different lifesaving rescues. Senior learners have a single lesson every two weeks. Grade 10's are currently playing a variety of games like continuous cricket, grade 11's are designing their own games whilst the grade 12's are hard at work improving their fitness with an exercise circuit.
