Life Sciences
Life Sciences is a very exciting subject to include as part of your school life. You will deal with informative topics that will help you throughout your life to make responsible decisions.
The Grade 8 and 9 curriculum contains the following four components: Life & Living; Matter & Materials; Energy & Change; Earth & Beyond. From this list you can observe that there are a number of related disciplines (for example, Science, Biology and Geography) which are combined, even though they are taught by different educators.
In Grade 10 to 12, the curriculum also consists of four components, these are: Tissues, Cells & Molecular Studies; Structure, Control & Processes; Environmental Studies; Diversity, Change & Continuity. All these components are treated as continuous over the three senior years.
Most of the topics that are discussed are very relevant to the world we live in. These include Genetics (Human Genome Project, genetically modified food, cloning), global environmental issues (global warming, pollution, alien invaders), sustainable development, electricity and medical conditions (malaria, HIV/AIDS, cancers). Information provided on healthy diets, nutrition and immunization will be of great value to most girls who will later become mothers and have families to take care of in the future. On the whole, Life Sciences is a useful subject to have if you are interested in any field of study involving medical, biological, ecological or agricultural sciences.
