HOCKEY

Hockey is one of the many thrilling and admired sports offered by PHSG. The school has three grass fields on the school premises and part shares an astro turf with Pretoria Boys High. Our ultimate dream, of course, would be to have an astro turf on our own school property. We field on average 16 teams each year, mainly during the second term, who all participate in the local league in Pretoria.

Our teams are all very competitive in the local league, and many of our hockey girls are selected each year to represent the Province in the annual Inter-Provincial tournaments. This gives our more talented players an opportunity to play hockey at a higher level. In addition to the local league our First Team, together with Netball, Squash, Tennis and Debating, also participate in the National Girls Schools Festival in March each year.

Each year we also have sporting exchanges with Pietermaritzburg Girls High and Eunice. These are competitive, but also highly fun filled weekends, as all our teams get a chance to compete. These exchanges usually alternate as home and away fixtures, affording the girls the opportunity to travel by train to their opponents and often offering as much excitement as the tournament itself.

Furthermore, the First Team is usually invited to participate in an annual tournament hosted by St Marys in Johannesburg. These tournaments always produce excellent hockey and are always a good learning experience for the girls.

A major highlight in the hockey calendar of the school was our tour to Argentina in 2005. We took a group of 28 girls who really did the school proud. The tour afforded the girls exposure to a different kind of hockey and coaching as well as an invaluable cultural experience.

In 2007 the First Team had the privilege of attending an international tournament in Cape Town. For the first time we travelled with Pretoria Boys High who were also invited to the tournament. Not only did this tour produce excellent hockey from both schools, but it also forged stronger ties between the two hockey teams. It was a fantastic tour which allowed us to play some of the best schools in the Cape as well as a few international teams. We hope to repeat this tour in 2008.
