Swimming
PHSG has an A, B and C Swimming Team. Our A team participates in the Johannesburg Girls' League, but competes in both the Johannesburg Girls' Inter-High as well as the Pretoria A Inter-High Gala. Our B and C teams participate in the Pretoria B-League and compete in the Pretoria B Inter-High Gala. In past years both the B and C Teams have finished well in the B League with the B team finishing in the top four for the past three years. It is hoped that 2008 will be the teams' most successful year to date and best wishes go to the team members and their Captains Bernice Venter and Karen Lambert for the season ahead.
Overall, the competitive swimming programme takes place in Term 1 and Term 4. Term 1 is the main season when weekly league galas are held as well as the Inter-High Galas. During Term 4 friendly relay galas are held.
The highlight of our season is also participation in the Girls' Aquatics Festival held in February each year. This gala was initiated by Pretoria High School for Girls in the late 1990s. Many of the top aquatics Girls' School Swimming, Diving and Waterpolo Teams participate in this Festival annually (Eunice High School, Pietermaritzburg Girls' High, Durban Girls' High, Our Lady of Fatima School, Clarendon Girls' High, St Stithians Girls' College, St Andrews School, etc). PHSG hosted this event in 2005. This year's Festival was hosted by Pietersmaritzberg Girl's High.
PHSG has been taking girls to KZN to swim the annual Midmar Mile for the past 14 years. Many girls, especially those who are not strong swimmers, but have trained hard and persevered through the swim, have really gained from the experience.
Our annual Inter-House Gala is another highlight on the School calendar. In addition, Grade 8's compete in their own Grade 8 Fun Gala during their first week at High School. Annual School Championships are also held in January every year as a form of final team selection, and also to allow the really talented swimmers to compete for the honour of Victrix Ludorum in each age-group.
Furthermore, many of our swimmers compete at club level, but are required to attend at least one school training session per week. This is essential to ensure social integration, acceptance and well as being a prerequisite for achieving a school colours award. All A, B, C team swimmers are required to attended school training sessions. Coaching is of a high standard, and stroke correction is given where possible.
A beginner swimming programme is also offered. Any junior who is identified as not being "water safe" is requested to attend extra-curricular beginner swimming lessons offered every week. A social training session is also offered every week, for girls wishing to train for the Midmar Mile, or to just simply get a little fitter.
