Volleyball
Some players pick a sport; other times the sport picks them - this is so true of Volleyball.
Volleyball is a dynamic team sport that requires players to have tremendous hand-eye coordination, reaction time, agility, flexibility, endurance and strength. It is a thinking and tactical game, where players need to show a lot of BMT (Big Match Temperament) when the matches are close.
Volleyball caters for players of all abilities and levels, ranging from beginners to advanced, in the age group 13-19 years old. We select teams according to two main age groups: U16 and U19, to comply with Volleyball South Africa's requirements.
Volleyball is played year round at PHSG. The team selections take place in the first week of February; after which the various teams will compete in the first round of league matches in the first and second terms. Players compete with various schools in the Gauteng area. In this time, players are also selected for provincial teams (U16, U18 and U21). The Inter-provincial tournament for all age groups takes place in the July holidays. We continue playing in the third and fourth terms, playing the second round of league matches. In the fourth term, our year ends with the American International School of Johannesburg's Annual Volleyball Tournament.
PHSG is well known for the high standards it sets on volleyball: we have enjoyed a lot of success in the past, with most of our teams ending in the top three positions of our schools' league. We generally have between 6 and 10 players who get selected into the provincial squads. Two past players have successfully played for the Youth/Junior National Team.
We have four outdoor courts: training and matches are both done outside. Players are encouraged to attend various training camps that are offered throughout the year by different organizations, in order to improve their general ability and skills.
We have been fortunate to have experienced and dedicated coaches over the past couple of years, who have given a lot of their time and expertise to raise the level of play to what it is today.
We are affiliated with the Gauteng Youth Volleyball Development Commission (GYVDEC), which falls under the Gauteng Central Committee and Volleyball South Africa.
