Chess is in its essence a game, in its form an art, and in its execution a science - Baron von der Lasa.
The strategic and tactical game of chess is played both on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Social chess is played on Tuesdays. This session allows for many beginners to be taught the fundamental basics of the game. The Thursday sessions cater for the more experienced girls, who wish to compete more seriously and test their strength against one another.
Last year was a highly successful year for the chess team, as they won a gold medal at the National Girl's School Festival. Furthermore, the team was placed second in the local chess league.
The year holds many exciting forthcoming events for the chess club. We plan to enter the team in the local chess league in term two and a development team in term three.
Other upcoming events that we wish to participate in are the weekend matches, which are organized by the Gauteng North Chess Association. Furthermore, we shall once more enter a chess team at the National Girls Festival in Port Elizabeth, in order to defend our title.
