I-SET Hey That’s Us Robotics Team Competes (and WOWs) in the Open Invitational Central Europe Champi

The FIRST® LEGO® League Open Invitational Central Europe Championships was held in Debrecen, Hungary from the 16th to the 19th of May 2018. This is the international challenge of the 2017 FLL Challenge Hydro Dynamics. For this competition, 72 teams from all over the world qualified. These teams gathered to compete in friendly manner and celebrate science and technology. Each team was required to present a research project related to the water theme, a technical presentation of the robot design and programming, and a team presentation. The competition over four days included several interviews, three robot rounds (preceded by a practice round), pit area discussions, international networking and exchange of traditional gifts.

South Africa was proudly represented by two teams. The Hyperion Bots team from Parklands College in Cape Town, and the I-SET Hey That’s Us team consisting of learners from Pretoria High School for Girls (Lara Gouws, Erin McKenna, Jacky James, Amiksha Sujan, Paviksha Govender, Amber Beaforth, Victoria Selby and Monique van Niekerk), Pretoria Boys High School (Dylan Wills, Jayden Wills and Keegan McKenna) and Maragon (Jono Robinson). Africa was represented by these two South African teams, as well as a Ghanaian team and a Nigerian team.

After four grueling days of competition for the teams and deliberations for the international collaboration of judges, the closing ceremony started at 15h00. Each member of each team was presented with a medal in recognition of the participation in the competition. However, not all teams were awarded trophies.

The I-SET Hey That’s Us Team were awarded a FIRST PLACE for Research Presentation! The team is grateful that all the hard work and long hours had been recognized! The team have also gathered hints and tips from other teams to build more awesome robots … the team plans to return to the international championships next year (some as team members, others as judges and referees)!
