PHSG's annual Spring Fair took place on 18 August and was a huge success. Despite the chill the event was well-supported and thousands of people made their way to Pretoria High School for Girls to participate in the wide range of activities or support the craft market. The event, which has been running for 99 years this year, was moved up a few weeks this year on account of Matric Prelims starting earlier than expected.
The Hi Roller, the Miami Trip and the Break Dancer were excitingly traumatising. Mrs Oertel and Madison Herman cooked up a storm but, sadly, did not win the special prize. Richard Lastrucci and his dad, Paul, defended Boys High's honour by making a delectable omelette and using the secret ingredient – Nik Naks! At the German Coffee Shop, the Bee Sting cake was voted the Best – Ever. Between nachos and slap chips people downed strawberries and cream.
At the Book Stall, people swirled around and around and many visitors spent MOST of their money here. Some dads had to carry and wheel boxes of books to the cars!
In the hall, the Auction items evoked a great deal of interest. There were Coca-Cola Matryoshka dolls, glass figurines, carpets and some pop art of icons.
For the older clientele, their pipe band fix was provided by the handsome young men from Boys High and for the younger viewers, there were the Boys High Gumboot dancers, some Afro fitness instructors and an array of really enthusiastic DJs. Girls cheered, shrieked, sang and danced.
As always, the face-painting and tattoo stalls were frequented by many Girls' High girls.
Everyone had their own favourites amongst the food stalls: Lebanese schwarma, the Portuguese prego rolls, some sugared doughnuts, iced coffee and traditional terrific pancakes.
A huge thanks to our awesome parents and everyone associated with the Parents' Association for arranging yet another wildly successful event! We love Spring Fair!
