Three learners from PHSG have made it through to the second round of the National Science Olympiad. Issy Spies, Tamzin van den Berg and Emily Hawkes took part in this super-exciting competition between the high schools in Pretoria, to determine two winning schools to represent the District at the National Olympiad. First rounds were held at The Glen with ten participating schools and then Silverton High School with eight participating schools. After these two rounds in August and in September, PHSG and Affies Seunshoër were declared victorious at a sudden death conclusion.
Emily and Issy said the first test was based on astronomy and the second on electricity. They had to rack their brains about neap and spring tides and Ohm's Law (not in the curriculum anymore), but it was really wonderful to achieve the medals, special shirts and best of all – chips and chocolates!
The next round is on 20 October in Jo’burg. The girls are a little anxious because this District prides itself on being winners year after year, but they agree the competitions are fun-filled and informative.
